In general:
Remember the triangle diagram of Dr. Douglas.
- 20% of the population has steatosis, which is fatty infiltration of the
liver (reversible process) without elevation of liver enzymes.
- A smaller proportion have steatohepatitis, which is fatty infiltration of
liver plus elevation of liver enzymes.
- Some go on to develop fibrosis.
- And some of those go on to develop hepatic failure.
The mainstay of treatment of steatosis and steatohepatitis is control of
diabetes, cholesterol; and to continue diet and exercise. This process is
reversible.
