The Spectrum of Sepsis
| Bacteremia | bacteria in the blood |
| SIRS | 2 or more of the following: tempreature > 38 or < 36, HR > 90, RR > 20, PaCO2 < 32, WBC>12K, <4K, or >10% bands |
| Sepsis | SIRS with definitive e/o infection |
| Severe Sepsis | Sepsis with organ dysfunction, hypoperfusion, hypotension (SBP<90) or >40 decrease from baseline |
| Septic Shock | Sepsis with hypotension despite adequate fluid resuscitation (500mL bolus) and perfusion abnormalities that may include oliguria, altered mental status, lactic acidosis |
| Multiple Organ Dysfunction Syndrome |
presence of altered organ function in an acutely ill patient such that homeostasis cannot be maintained without intervention |
